EMDR

Employees who had experienced “person-under-train accident or had been assaulted at work were recruited.” Six sessions of EMDR resulted in remission of PTSD in 67% compared to 11% in the wait list control.  Hogberg, G. et al., (2007). Research on Public transport workers   and chronic PTSD

EMDR is One of the most significant and exciting developments in the treatment of psychological trauma and is supported by extensive research! EMDR is stated to be an empirically supported treatment choice for adult PTSD
(NICE 2005 - National Institute for Clinical Excellence)

“Having suffered from PTSD myself and worked through 8 years
of talking based therapy where I struggled to verbalise and process
something that no words could accurately describe, I prayed for something
that could reach me and help turn the raw emotional trauma into a memory.

I wish my therapist had been trained in EMDR as it would have helped
speed up the process and alleviated the symptoms of my distress.” SM Essex

“EMDR both improves PTSD symptoms and reduces
the number of people with PTSD diagnosis”
BMJ 2007 - British Medical Journal

  • What is EMDR?

“Symptoms arise when events are inadequately processed, and can be eradicated when the memory is fully processed. It is an integrative therapy, synthesizing elements of many traditional psychological orientations, such as psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, experiential, physiological, and interpersonal therapies” Wikipedia

  • How does EMDR work?

When people are traumatised, they may experience strong emotions, which can be a bit like a house struck by lighting and in which the circuit blows. There is no trip switch in our brains to stop an overload, which means the brain struggles to process information, as it would normally do. The trauma is ‘freeze framed’ within, as raw unprocessed data, which can cause flash backs, intrusive memories and even a readjustment to the personality. Such experiences have a lasting negative effect on the way people are in the world and can affect who they are and how they are living.

EMDR directly influences the way that the brain functions. It helps to restore normal ways of processing information, of processing life!

EMDR works to put the raw data into a memory format with out the depth of emotional content that can so often be trapped within the individual. The event can still be remembered but it contains little emotional charge/energy. EMDR copies what the brain usually does during dreaming or REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. EMDR can be thought of as an inherently natural therapy which assists the brain in working through distressing material.
