Diploma in Integrative Counselling (Part 2)

Course Content of the Diploma in Integrative Counselling

Module 1: Professional and Organisational Issues

  • The BACP framework for good practice will be explored in detailed with the key concepts of: confidentiality, referrals, contracting, professional conduct and responsibility, boundaries, client welfare, legal responsibilities, professional negligence and insurance against legal action, health and safety, counselling in a diverse society (race, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation), power issues within the counselling process, being covered.
  • An exploration of the individual"s philosophical base and approach to counselling will be given time to evolve and explored through the discussion of clinical practice. Each session will cover a topic related to clinical counselling practice where vignettes of students client work will be used to further develop professional levels of competence. The areas being covered: the counsellor"s role, responsibilities and use of one to one supervision; case work management (eg notes, risk assessments); Evaluation of casework; working within a multidisciplinary team; beginning, middle and ends in counselling practice and ethical dilemmas.

Module 2: Integrative Counselling Skills and Theory

  • Skills - Students will cover and further develop use of: rapport building, active listening, silence, reflecting content and feelings, paraphrasing and summarising, focusing and challenging.
  • Theory - There will be an introduction to Egan"s Integrative model exploring an overview, history, philosophical underpinning and Concept of Self, Core condition and working alliance.

Module 3: Advanced Counselling Skills

  • Here the students will cover the additional and advanced skills of immediacy, advanced challenging, reflecting upon using the process and advanced skills needed to work at relational depth and with all clients. This module is designed to give trainees the depth to work with distressed clients and at high intensity level.

Module 4: Psychopathology and CBT

  • This will cover awareness of psychopathology and the meaning of psychological diagnosis; drug based therapy and the anatomy and physiology of the brain. The specific DSM criteria for panic and anxiety disorders (OCD, Panic attacks, GAD), Depressive disorders and PTSD will be clarified.
  • Trainees will also gain an understanding of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; the theory, skills and process involved gaining practical experience of working within this modality.

Module 5: Psychodynamic Skills and Theory

  • Skills - Trainees will develop the analytic interventions and have the chance to compare the experience from the client and therapist perspective. This will include Inner child and Parts therapy interventions.
  • Theory - This section will offer a thorough grounding of knowledge regarding the philosophy and aims of analytical psychotherapy, the process and the therapeutic relationship.

Module 6 - Working with Groups and Children

  • This module will introduce students to the fundamental theoretical principles of working with groups and children, the aims of the work, the therapist"s relationship and the role of the therapist.There will be an introduction to the skills needed when working as a group facilitator/therapist and skills for working with children.

Module 7 - Existential Theory and Practice

  • This module will introduce the fundamental theories of existential philosophy and phenomenology, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. Practitioners such as Binswanger, Boss, May, Yalom, Laing and van Deurzen will also be generally explored. The specific existential phenomenological skills will be introduced and practiced focusing on questioning, epoché and the emergence of existential themes and conflicts.

Module 8 - Life Span Psychology

  • This module will introduce 2 main theories of life span development Erikson's psycho-social crisis model and Levinson"s Seasons of a Man"s Life and critically evaluate them. Students will also explore motor and cognitive development, and landmarks of life such as adolescent identity, marriage, divorce, first child, aging and wisdom.

Module 9 - Human Sexuality

  • The aim of the course is to introduce trainees to theoretical models concerning human sexuality and the role and function it plays in psychological life. Existing theories of human sexuality will be considered and evaluated in relation to developmental and personal issues. Students will be able to explore working with sexual issues and also couples/relationship counselling will be studied.

Module 10 - Personal Development and Self Awareness

  • Trainees will have the opportunity to look at their own position in the world, their moods and states, thinking patterns to enhance self awareness and ultimately personal growth. This is a very practical course taught through personal mastery of themselves as human beings and as counsellors. Focusing on communication, language, perception, limiting thoughts, emotional states and behaviours.

Module 11 - Placement

  • This module sets out tasks to be undertaken whilst completing the 150 client Placement hours, of which 3 clients, should be seen for not less than 6 sessions. The aim is to develop a reflective practitioner who can use supervision appropriately, relate practice to theory and show competency to practice.
